About Whapmagoostui First Nation

A Cree community of Eeyou Istchee, connected to the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) and the Cree Nation Government

Wâpimâkuštui (ᐙᐱᒫᑯᔥᑐᐃ): Whapmagoostui First Nation (official name: Première nation de Whapmagoostui) is most often translated as "Place of the Beluga", and is also known as the Place of the Whales. Earlier names include Great Whale and Poste de la Baleine. The Great Whale River Cree band is named as a party to the 1975 James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement.

Population: As of December 31, 2025, Indigenous Services Canada counts 1,052 registered members, including 922 residents and 130 non-residents.

Location: Our community is at the mouth of the Great Whale River, where it flows into Hudson Bay. Our land is part of Eeyou Istchee, the Cree territory, and sits in Nunavik territory, slightly north of the 55th parallel. Families have traditionally hunted up the Great Whale, Little Whale and Nastapoka watersheds. There is no road access: the community is reached by Air Creebec and Air Inuit from Montréal, or by boat in late summer.

Culture: Our Cree community is joined to the Inuit community of Kuujjuarapik, and Cree and Inuit have lived together permanently at the river mouth since 1950. Cree traditions, including the walking out ceremony, remain part of who we are. Community life includes local facilities, accommodations, restaurants and stores, and our community radio station, CKRQ-FM, broadcasts at 96.5 FM.
